Introduction

Last month, I embarked on a thrilling journey into the world of game development by participating in the Themed Horror Game Jam #14. The result was "Nightfall: Bloodlust Unleashed", a game that challenged players to embrace their inner vampire and fulfill nightly missions of macabre proportions.

However, every creation has its flaws, and "Nightfall" was no exception. While the game had its moments, it also had its share of issues that needed addressing. In this blog post, I want to take you on a new journey, one of transformation and reinvention. Join me as I share my vision of turning "Nightfall" from a horror game with flaws into an amazing platformer adventure that will captivate players and leave them craving for more.


The Original Game

In the original "Nightfall: Bloodlust Unleashed," players assumed the role of a vampire with nightly missions. The task was clear: eliminate a set number of victims within a limited time frame. But there was a catch - a relentless knight patrolling the map. If you made a kill in plain sight of the knight, it was game over.

The game had its appeal, but it also had its share of bugs and limitations:

  1. Repetitive Map: The game world became monotonous as the same map was used repeatedly, leading to a sense of predictability and boredom.

  2. Spawn Point Stagnation: Food and victims seemed to appear in the same locations repeatedly, diminishing the element of surprise and challenge.

  3. Graphic Shortcomings: The graphics, primarily composed of free assets, lacked cohesion, resulting in an underwhelming visual experience.


The Vision for Transformation

To breathe new life into "Nightfall: Bloodlust Unleashed," I envision a game that transcends its horror roots and embraces the platformer adventure genre. Here's what I have in mind:

  1. Dynamic Level Design: A platformer adventure should offer diverse and dynamic levels, ensuring that players are always engaged and excited to explore new challenges.

  2. Randomized Elements: To keep players on their toes, I plan to introduce randomized spawn points for food and victims. This will add an element of unpredictability and strategy.

  3. Revamped Graphics: By investing in improved graphics and art assets, I aim to create a visually stunning world that immerses players in the vampire's realm.
